Each year during its annual Dredging Summit & Expo, the Western Dredging Association proudly presents Environmental Excellence Awards, which recognize projects for their outstanding contributions to the goals of WEDA that include “promoting communication and understanding of environmental issues and stimulating new solutions associated with dredging and placement of dredged materials such that the projects, including navigation, environmental, and adaptation to climate change, are accomplished in an efficient manner that meet internationally recognized environmental goals.”
The Environmental Awards Committee reviews each application and discusses the overall project with emphasis on innovation, outreach/education, environmental benefits, economic benefits, sustainability, and transferability. This year the awards were given in two categories:
The Environmental Excellence Award for an Infrastructure-Based Project was presented to the Project Team for “Synchronized Success: Aligning Port, Industry, and Agency Environmental Objectives through Infrastructure and Dredging” at the Port of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
The Environmental Excellence Award for an Environmental-Based Project was presented to the Project Team for “Graveline Bay Marsh Restoration – Maximizing Back-Barrier Island Marsh Habitat” at Dauphin Island, Alabama.
