A plan to build a second regional sewage-treatment plant in Wayne County has gotten a $5 million boost from the state.

State Sen. Pam Helming and Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office announced Thursday that the Wayne County Water and Sewer Authority has been awarded $5 million toward the cost of constructing the new plant, estimated to cost $33.25 million.

The grant was among $27.5 million awarded by the state for water and sewer infrastructure projects in the region.

The towns of Macedon and Marion, as well as the village of Palmyra, all of which have aging wastewater-treatment plants, are teaming up with the Water and Sewer Authority to create a new plant to serve the three municipalities.

The leaders of the three governments referred all comments to Marty Aman, the Water and Sewer Authority’s director.

Aman was unavailable for comment on Thursday.

Helming said the projects are targeted toward protecting municipal and residential water supplies, improving wastewater treatment and combating harmful algal blooms in the Finger Lakes.

“The Finger Lakes have experienced significant amounts of harmful algal blooms in recent years,” she said. “As we witnessed with Owasco Lake and more recently with Canandaigua Lake, these toxins threaten municipal water systems that many residents count on for their drinking water supply, and they pose serious dangers for local residents who draw their water directly from the lakes.”

Besides the $5 million for the regional wastewater plant, Helming and Cuomo announced a number of other big grants for water and sewer infrastructure:

– $575,075 for the village of Clyde’s $2.3 million wastewater treatment plant improvement project;

– $2.87 million for the town of Geneva water system capacity improvements totaling $4.95 million;
