WattHub develops second fast-charging plaza on Maasvlakte in Rotterdam

Posted on March 24, 2025

Rotterdam, The Netherlands – In the summer of 2025, WattHub, a partnership between Van Oord and Betuwewind, will open a new fast-charging plaza on Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, near the RWG Terminal. This ultra-modern charging plaza of no less than 5,000 m² will be the first location on Maasvlakte to offer lorries, heavy construction equipment and other electric vehicles the possibility of fast charging 24/7.

WattHub develops charging solutions that contribute to a sustainable and emission-free future. With a focus on innovative technology and strategic locations, WattHub is making an important contribution to the energy transition of various sectors. WattHub’s ambition is to realise several fast-charging plazas in the Netherlands, so that even more regions can become sustainable and smart charging options become widely accessible. Following the opening of the world’s first fast-charging plaza for lorries and heavy construction equipment in Geldermalsen in 2023, a world first, this second fast-charging plaza on the Maasvlakte seamlessly ties in with these ambitious plans.

With its strategic location at one of Europe’s most important logistics hubs, this new charging plaza will play a crucial role in making freight transport more sustainable. Maasvlakte has a high traffic volume of lorries every day, making the location a perfect fit for the growing demand for fast-charging infrastructure for electric freight transport. The charging plaza is designed for both lorries and heavy construction equipment, making a significant contribution to more sustainable logistics and construction sectors. In addition, the possibilities of using this charging plaza for inland shipping vessels and construction vessels are also being explored.

Carlos Mollet, Commercial Director of Dredging & Infra at Van Oord: ‘We are enormously proud that we will be able to realise this second WattHub fast-charging plaza. Climate goals, such as reducing emissions, pose major challenges for the logistics and construction sectors. Innovative solutions such as these fast-charging plazas are crucial to meet these challenges. Additionally, the location of this charging plaza offers opportunities for the development of charging facilities for the maritime industry. As a marine contractor, we are continuously working on making our fleet more sustainable and executing marine construction projects emission-free. This charging plaza can contribute significantly to that effort. Contributing to this push to make the region more sustainable feels incredibly good and is in line with our ambition to make a difference with sustainable solutions and contribute to a better world for future generations.’

Gerben van den Berg, director at WattHub: ‘With this second WattHub location, we are making the switch to electric freight transport feasible and practical for a larger group of users still. Maasvlakte is the logistics heart of the Netherlands. Realising a fast-charging plaza here will be a big step forward in the electrification of freight transport.’
