Four engineering specializations under one roof
Rotterdam, March 12, 2026 – Dutch maritime engineering firm Vuyk Engineering marked five years of operating as an independent design house in March, following a strategic decision in 2021 to continue under its own management after more than two decades as part of larger industry groups.
Founded in 1979, the Rotterdam‑based company now operates without formal affiliation to shipyards, builders or other engineering firms. The move was intended to strengthen an autonomous role within complex maritime and offshore projects. “In 2021, we deliberately chose an independent structure to safeguard our autonomy and create a stable basis for long‑term engineering partnerships,” said Floris Toetenel, Director at Vuyk Engineering. “Our independence allows us to focus on developing solutions that meet our clients’ requirements, without conflicting interests.”
Since becoming independent, Vuyk has expanded its client base across the maritime and offshore sectors, working with contractors, offshore operators, OEMs and shipowners in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The company says its ability to cooperate with any fabricator or yard selected by a client has strengthened its position in the market. Recent projects include the design of Allseas’ semi‑submersible heavy transport vessel Grand Tour, Femern Link Contractors built the Vuyk-designed multi-purpose pontoon Maya, and the Modiga tool developed for DEME successfully allowed the installation of monopile foundations in the rocky seabed of France. “Our working methods and engineering expertise have supported further growth, while long‑term clients have continued to work with us following the transition,” Toetenel said.
Alongside its independent positioning, Vuyk has continued to invest in technical capability. The company focuses on strengthening expertise in areas where it expects future demand, including nuclear and other alternative power concepts and optimisation technologies. “We continuously adapt to market developments by improving existing solutions and building knowledge in emerging technologies,” said Erwin Put, Director Operations at Vuyk Engineering. “This allows us to apply new approaches when projects require them.”
In 2024, Vuyk expanded its international presence with the opening of offices in Malaysia and Houston. The Malaysian office supports projects through combined expertise in naval architecture, mechanical engineering and structural design. In the United States, activities initially focused on offshore wind but have since shifted towards integrated engineering solutions for the dredging industry, reflecting regional market demand.
After five years of working independently, Vuyk remains focused on what lies ahead. The strategic course is determined by long-term technical quality over short-term growth. That means supporting customers, investing in people and ensuring continuity. “Our goal is to be and remain the best maritime design house for ship design, equipment design, methods engineering and temporary steel design,” Toetenel concludes. “Our way to achieve that, is continuing to invest in knowledge and strengthening the collaboration between our disciplines, our employees and our loyal customers.”
