Skanska completes major upgrades at Portsmouth Marine Terminal, boosting Virginia’s offshore wind project.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A key component of Virginia’s offshore wind industry has received a major upgrade, thanks to a redevelopment project led by construction firm Skanska.

The company announced the completion of its work for the Virginia Port Authority, enhancing 72 acres of the Portsmouth Marine Terminal and 1,500 feet of wharf space. This terminal serves as a crucial staging area for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, a large-scale effort to expand renewable energy production off Virginia’s coast.

Skanska began the redevelopment in 2022, constructing three heavy-lift berths and reinforcing the site to accommodate the immense weight of wind turbine components.

The project also included soil strengthening, high-mast lighting installation, a stormwater collection system, and the pouring of 26,500 cubic yards of concrete.

The upgrades will play a key role in supporting the next phase of the offshore wind project, which aims to power hundreds of thousands of homes with clean, renewable energy.
