In late April, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. of Illinois finished several months of beach nourishment on Bogue Banks, ending here in western Emerald Isle.
The project cost $28.2 million and also included western Atlantic Beach, all of Pine Knoll Shores and a small part of Salter Path.
In all, the company, under the county’s direction, dredged about 2 million cubic yards of sand from the ocean off Atlantic Beach and built new dunes and recreational beach along 9.5 miles of the island.
