Ventura County Harbors, Port of Hueneme Receive $14.8 Million in Federal Funding

Posted on December 6, 2018

Channel Islands and Ventura harbors and the Port of Hueneme are set to receive $14.8 million in federal funding.

U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley announced the funds, which will be used to strengthen local infrastructure, including dredging of the two harbors, on Tuesday. She noted that all three locations play a key role in Ventura County’s economy and said the new funds would bolster their operations.

“Ventura Harbor, Channel Islands Harbor, and the Port of Hueneme are essential drivers of our local economy, and they play a critical role in fueling job growth here in Ventura County,” Brownley, D-Thousand Oaks, said in a statement. “I am pleased to announce this new funding for important infrastructure investments that will help keep our port and harbors open for business, which is good for Ventura County residents and businesses alike.”

The funds are part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ fiscal year 2019 work plan, which includes dredging at the Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor. Channel Islands Harbor will receive $6.29 million for dredging, while Ventura Harbor will receive $8.37 million

The Port of Hueneme will receive $140,000 from the plan, which was awarded as part of a donor port legislation that Brownley spearheaded in 2016. Donor ports receive extra funds because they contribute more to the Harbor Maintenance Trust than they receive back.

“For the second year in a row now, Congresswoman Brownley’s leadership has played a vital role in enabling the port to receive its donor equity funding,” Port of Hueneme CEO Kristin Decas said in a statement. “Brownley’s leadership continues to drive the Port of Hueneme forward and create more equity in the federal HMT funding formula. These funds will directly benefit the port’s deepening project, that promises to grow business and support local beaches with sand replenishment.”
