Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 11 March 2026 – Van Oord has received the final award from the Limburg Water Board for the implementation of the Groene Rivier Well area development. This extensive project will better protect northern Limburg from flooding in the coming years, while at the same time creating space for nature development and future-proof agriculture.
The Green River Well area development is part of the Netherlands’ Flood Protection Programme (HWBP) and focuses on the sustainable protection of the surrounding communities. The current dykes are not high and strong enough to safely accommodate future water levels, necessitating reinforcement and relocation.
Scope of work
Van Oord will use its long-standing expertise in water safety and dyke reinforcement to restore historic river courses, strengthen flood defences, adapt infrastructure for better flow and thus increase flood safety in the area. Outdoor work will start in 2027 and is expected to be completed in 2029.
More than just dyke reinforcement
The Green River Well area development is much more than a dyke reinforcement project. It is a sustainable, future-oriented area approach in which flood protection goes hand in hand with nature development and climate adaptation. Directly reusing the soil released from excavation work for the construction of flood defences supports circular construction and minimises emissions during construction. In the redesign nature and agriculture will also have a greater role. Future-proof agriculture cleverly combines food production, landscape management, soil health and biodiversity, resulting in an attractive, nature-rich area that not only protects but also contributes to a healthy living environment.
