Maritime Contractor Van Oord has entered into a contract with Marine Coordination
Services to support work at the Norther offshore wind project. Van Oord is main contractor at the Belgian site and overseeing its construction.
Dutch outfit Marine Coordination Services has deployed a team of four to support the marine coordination centre. Van Oord will put this team to use in the construction of the offshore wind farm. The team will operate from Ostend and can be deployed 24/7.
The €1.2bn Norther wind farm is being constructed 23km from the Belgian port of Zeebruges and is expected to be operational in 2019. It is owned by Elicio, Eneco & Diamond Generating Europe and is currently poised to be the largest project off the Belgian coast. Installation of the MHI Vestas V164-8.0MW turbines is expected to commence in the coming weeks with full commissioning by the end of the year.
Further to Norther, Marine Coordination Services is currently supporting work at the Merkur offshore wind farm. The project is located about 35km north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea. It features 66 GE Haliade 160-6MW turbines, the last of which was installed in September 2018. Commissioning is expected in March 2019.
