The Van Oord Group, of the Netherlands, has subcontracted Mozambican dredging company Emodraga to increase the emergency dredging operation of the access channel of the port of Beira in Sofala province, which started in November 2017 and is due to be completed in April this year, said the chairman of the Mozambican company.
Domingos Bié, chairman of Emodraga’s Board of Directors, who confirmed this information to Mozambican newspaper Notícias, noted that his company is working on this project with two dredgers with a capacity of 1,000 cubic metres each.
These are the Aruangwa dredger, recently repaired in South Africa, and the Alcântara Santos dredger, two suction vessels that will join two others from the Van Oord group, which was awarded the emergency dredging tender at the port of Beira for a period of six months.
The operation covers the emergency dredging of the docks and manoeuvreing basins of the port of Beira, including moving sands to the landfill of the future Grain Terminal, and approximately 3 million cubic metres of sediment are expected to be removed.
The project is budgeted at around 25 million euros, provided by own funds of the state-owned port and rail company CFM, with the aim of returning the width of the channel to 250 metres and a depth of 8.0 metres and 9.20 metres in the straight sections and the so-called Macúti curve, respectively.
Once this operation is completed, the port of Beira will be able to receive ships of up to 60,000 gross tonnage, operating 24 hours a day, against the current capacity of up to 30,000 tons.
