USCAE Crews Arrive to Begin Dredging Quincy Bay, Il.

Posted on June 20, 2025

QUINCY (WGEM) – Crews with the Army Corps of Engineers have arrived in Quincy to begin dredging the Mississippi River.

They will begin dredging six feet of depth in Quincy Bay from Bayview Bridge, north beyond the boat ramps at Kessler Park.

The $3.5 million project will improve waterflow in the bay and remove silt buildup.

“The Front and Hampshire Street ramp is closed because of siltation and the four ramps at the north end of Kessler Park are all unusable, unless we got high water, so we’re down to a single one lane boat ramp right here behind us, that’s the only one left to service all the boats coming in and out here in Quincy,” said Glenn Sanders, president of the Mississippi Valley Hunters and Fishermen’s Association. “So, this project will be addressing the ramps up at Kessler, getting those opened back up for the public to use and it’ll give us more water in front of the existing one here.”

Recreational boating will be allowed during the project.

“We know we’re going to go over top of the Fourth of July holiday which is a big weekend for boating, and they are going to try to work with us as much as possible to allow the recreational boaters to be able to get through the bay, get to the boat ramp and get to the marina during the process,” said Sanders. “There will be sometimes when, because of where they are positioning the dredge at that that might not be possible.”

The dredging project is scheduled to last 55 days.
