USACE, Virginia Beach to host public meetings on Coastal Storm Risk Management Study Feb 3-8

Posted on February 4, 2025

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District alongside the City of Virginia Beach will host four in-person engagement opportunities during the week of Feb. 3-8 in support of the Virginia Beach Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study. The purpose of the study is to investigate solutions to manage coastal storm risk. The study team is considering different types of measures to manage coastal storm surge risk in several watersheds of Virginia Beach. The different types of measures currently being considered include: (1) structural measures, such as storm surge barriers and floodwalls (2) nonstructural measures, such as elevating residential buildings and floodproofing critical infrastructure, and (3) Nature-based solutions such as wetlands enhancement opportunities and living shorelines. The study will include evaluating some of the structural measures that were identified in the City of Virginia Beach’s Sea Level Wise Adaptation Strategy published in 2020.  For more information on the City of Virginia Beach’s Sea Level Wise Adaptation Strategy Report, please visit: https://pw.virginiabeach.gov/stormwater/sea-level-wise.
