USACE Successfully Completes Restoration of Erie North Pier

Posted on December 3, 2025

The Erie North Pier, a vital navigation structure and popular recreational destination, has been fully repaired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District, ensuring safe passage for commercial and recreational vessels and supporting millions in regional economic activity.

The pier plays a critical role in allowing ships carrying hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo to travel between the Great Lakes and Erie Harbor, contributing nearly $43 million in business revenue and labor income annually. It also provides access for the U.S. Coast Guard, fishing enthusiasts, and visitors to the Presque Isle North Pierhead Lighthouse.

The project will cost $6.6 million and is 100% federally funded. Around 2,600 feet with new concrete and a steel sheet pile repaired. Phase One had begun in April 2024 and was completed in October 2024.

Phase Two of the project began during August 2025 and has a planned completion set for December 2025. This phase included repairs to the eastern end with steel sheet pile, installed granular fill, and added a concrete cap along 1,000 feet near the lighthouse.

Both phases were completed under contracts with Architectural Consulting Group of Chicago, Inc. The process of the project can be found here where viewers can watch the project phases throughout their completion. Photos and more can be found on this website.

The Erie North Pier has safeguarded Erie Harbor since 1900. In 2022, the harbor handled 716,000 tons of cargo, including limestone, sand, gravel, and salt. Waterborne transportation through the harbor supports $32.8 million in business revenue, 138 jobs, and $10.1 million in labor income.

“The North Pier is a critical component of the Great Lakes Navigation System, supporting economic growth and strategic value to the nation, as well as great waterfront recreation,” said Lt. Col. Robert Burnham, USACE Buffalo District commander. “We’re proud to deliver this repair for residents and visitors from across the region.”

The pier has reopened for walking and fishing at the end of Presque Isle State Park following periodic closures during construction.
