USACE schedules hybrid FNOD Restoration Advisory Board meeting for Sept 2

SUFFOLK, Va. -- A munition uncovered by contractors lays on the ground at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot on Dec. 2, 2005. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999. SUFFOLK, Va. — Community members can learn more about restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) and hear the latest cleanup progress during a hybrid (virtual and in-person) quarterly Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meeting scheduled for 6:15 to 8 p.m. Sept 2.

The meeting is open to the public in an in-person and online format. People attending the meeting in person, at 7000 College Drive, room W105, Suffolk, Va., must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

People who would like to attend the meeting virtually, should contact Mr. Sher Zaman by phone at (410) 320-9516 or by email at Sher.Zaman@usace.army.mil for online meeting access information.

Virtual attendees should log on to the meeting at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled meeting start time in case there are technical issues.

Topics planned for the September meeting include:

• Public Involvement Plan Update Progress
• City of Suffolk Economic Development Office reuse update
• Munitions and Explosives of Concern Shoreline Project (AOC-37) Draft Risk Assessment

Board members and stakeholders include residents, area businesses; local, state and federal regulators; property owners, USACE personnel and contractors, and other interested parties.

The quarterly RAB meetings serve as a public forum for the USACE’s cleanup progress at the 975-acre defense depot, located near the former Tidewater Community College Portsmouth campus. During the meetings, RAB members ask questions and provide input on all aspects of the restoration process to the interagency project team. The USEPA placed FNOD on its National Priorities List (NPL) in 1997. Two years later, the FNOD RAB was established.
