The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District, is planning a maintenance dredging project for East Rockaway Inlet, New York. The contract, valued at between $10 million and $15 million, is expected to be awarded in July 2025.
The project will involve removing approximately 450,000 cubic yards (344,049 cubic metres) of sand from the inlet and its deposition basins to a depth of -14 feet mean lower low water. The stated purpose is to maintain safe navigation for commercial and recreational vessels by alleviating the effects of shoaling.
The dredged sand will be used for beach nourishment and placed along the Far Rockaway Beach shoreline. The work will be accomplished using a hydraulic dredge.
The USACE intends to issue a notice to proceed with the work in October 2025. Once started, the contractor will have 60 calendar days to complete the project and must maintain a production rate of at least 12,000 cubic yards per day. The contract specifies liquidated damages of $2,787 per day for delays.
