GALVESTON, Texas — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Galveston District (SWG) will host a pre-bid conference for their Sabine-Neches Waterway (SNWW) Channel Improvement Project’s (CIP) Contract 6 at their headquarters, June 28, 2024.

The conference will provide interested contractors an opportunity to learn more about the solicitation and requirements for submitting qualified bids. The objective of the SNWW CIP is to deepen the channel by 8 ft. from the current authorized depth of -42 ft. to -50 ft. mean lower low water (MLLW), from the Sabine Extension Channel to the Sabine Pass Outer Bar Channel, and from -40 ft. to -48 ft. MLLW for the Sabine Pass Jetty Channel through the inland channel reaches.
The deepening of the channel, intended to accommodate larger vessels in the Aframax and Suezmax Classes, was authorized by the U.S. Congress in the Water Resources and Development Act of 2014. The improvements will reduce transportation costs, enhance channel efficiency and safety, develop environmentally suitable dredged material placement, and address high shoaling spots. The Contract 6 channel deepening will cover a total of 41 miles; the existing channel accounts for 28 miles (Sabine Bank Channel to the inland extent of the Sabine Pass Channel), while construction of the Extension Channel will lengthen the channel by 13 miles in the offshore direction. The channel deepening associated with Contract 6 of the SNWW CIP will require dredging approximately 35.8 million cubic yards (MCY) of material, approximately 6.9 MCY of which will be shoaled material and 28.9 MCY will be new-work material. Hopper dredging will be performed to remove this material from the channel. This material will be placed in Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Sites (ODMDS) in the Gulf of Mexico.
