JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, awarded a contract for the maintenance dredging of Federal navigation channels within the Intracoastal Waterway (IWW), starting near Jupiter and continuing near the St. Lucie Inlet, for the amount of $7.2 million to Southwind Construction of Evansville, Indiana.
Maintenance dredging is scheduled to commence near the Jupiter Inlet in December. Once dredging there is complete, the contractor will mobilize to the IWW and Okeechobee Waterway (OWW) near the St. Lucie Inlet.
Dredging is anticipated to commence in December and continue through April of 2026. The project requires the dredging of approximately 147,000 cubic yards of shoaling from IWW Cuts P-1 through P-10 and 218,000 of shoaling from IWW cuts M-1 through M-6 and OWW Cut-1 to a required depths of 10 feet and 8 feet, plus 2 feet of allowable over-depth.
Dredge material will be dispersed on the beach south of Jupiter Inlet between FDEP R-Monument R-15 to R-19 for portions of the IWW near Jupiter Inlet. Dredge material will be dispersed in the St. Lucie Impoundment Basin for portions of the IWW near St. Lucie Inlet.
The dredge pipe will be weighted and submerged, and its underwater route marked with orange poly balls and lighted danger diamond buoys. Dredging and placement will be continuous, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until the project is complete. Local Notice to Mariners will be issued 30 days prior to commencing dredging.
USACE also requests that boaters refrain from anchoring and swimming in officially demarcated sections along the shoreline. Beachgoers should avoid wading on the beach shoreline adjacent to the discharge areas.
The USACE team will conduct protective turtle monitoring throughout the duration of the project.
