USACE 542nd Forward Engineer Support Team deploys to Europe

Posted on April 6, 2026

The 542nd Forward Engineer Support Team-Advanced (FEST-A) deployed to Europe on March 26, 2026, to provide technical engineering support to U.S. European Command.

The 542nd, stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assigned as a detachment to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District. The detachment is one of eight active-duty FEST-A teams in the country.

The FEST-A are mobile, rapid-response units that deploy in support of combatant commands, providing specialized engineering capabilities.

The team consists of eight personnel, including an officer in charge, one noncommissioned officer and six USACE civilian technical experts representing six disciplines. These experts include mechanical, environmental, electrical, civil and structural engineers, as well as a geospatial information systems specialist.

In Europe, the 542nd is headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Frankfurt. From there, the team will conduct operations across Europe for the next six months.

“In the first 30 days on the ground, the team will execute base camp master planning in Romania and conduct site surveys in Germany and Poland,” said Maj. Jose Santiago, 542nd FEST-A commander.

To prepare for deployment, the team participated in a certification exercise to assess its readiness to perform specific mission sets. For the exercise, the team deployed to Panama City, Panama, from Jan. 10-22, 2026

“Our team went to Panama on behalf of the Joint Security Cooperation Group–Panama, which manages all U.S. military security, training and logistics in the country,” Santiago said.

While in Panama, the 542nd was tasked with providing base camp planning at Aeronaval Base Cristóbal Colón, formerly known as Fort Sherman.

“Our mission was to identify all requirements for repairing, renovating and constructing infrastructure to support additional personnel and a persistent U.S. presence in Panama,” Santiago said.

Aeronaval Base Cristóbal Colón hosts the Jungle Operations Training Course-Panama (JOTC-P). The course is an 18-day intensive training program designed to enhance jungle warfare skills, survival and interoperability between U.S. and Panamanian forces.

The team will remain in Europe until September 2026. Then the 542nd will be relieved by another FEST-A team, which will assume all engineering responsibilities within the area of operations.
