Work on a $3bn project to build Patimban Port in Indonesia is anticipated to begin in July with the aim of the port being partially open for operation in March 2019.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation said that a government deal to award a $1.2bn construction contract to a consortium of three Japanese companies and two Indonesian companies is in the process of being finalised. Nikkei Asian Review reported that Japan’s Penta-Ocean Construction, Toa and Rinkai Nissan Construction, plus state-owned construction firms Wijaya Karya and Pembangunan Perumahan, will handle part of the first phase project.
“God willing, if there is no problem the groundbreaking will be in early July 2018,” said Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, according to Tempo.
Major transport hub
The Indonesian government envisions Patimban, to be located 150km east of Jakarta, becoming a major Southeast Asian transport hub, along with the port of Tanjung Priok in northern Jakarta.
The Japanese International Cooperation Agency is believed to be supplying a loan to the Indonesian government for the project.
Construction of the port’s car terminal was expected to be completed in March 2019, with the port opening fully in 2027.
