The United States would play a substantive role in dredging rivers in Bangladesh, US ambassador Earl Miller said in Dhaka.

He was speaking at a seminar and a cultural function staged on the occasion of signing of a partnership agreement between two dredging companies — one of Bangladesh and the other of the United States.

The US embassy in Dhaka organised the seminar to throw light on America’s Indo-Pacific vision where speakers stressed the need for establishing international rules-based order for air traffic and sea routes travel, freedom of navigation at seas, developing strong institutions and enforcement of good governance.

The swelling role of the private sector and increase in trade would also be key to economic development and prosperity in the region, they said.

Indo-Pacific regional coordinator based in the US embassy in Sri Lanka Ari Nathan, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Representatives of two private sector oganisations Charles Sinunu, vice-president of DSC Dredge of the US, and Gauhar Siraj Jamil, chairman of Deep Diggers of Bangladesh, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies for promoting American dredging technologies and solutions for sustainable digging of rivers in Bangladesh.
