The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District celebrated the tenure of a new leader during change of command ceremony Tuesday.

After the passing of the command flag, Col. Richard “Rick” Hansen‘s 3-year run as commander of the New Orleans District ended and Col. Michael Clancy assumed his role as the district’s 63rd commander.

Hansen said during his tenure there has been progress made on storm and flood reduction system and the region was blessed with mild hurricane seasons.

Looking ahead, Clancy is excited to see what challenges and responsibilities this new posts will bring

“Here is no region in the United States, maybe even the world that is more blessed and yet challenged by water resource issues. I figured, if you’re going to be a water resource Corps of Engineers officer, what better place to do it than New Orleans,” said Clancy.

Clancy assumes his role effective immediately. Hansen will soon leave for Afghanistan, where he will head a security unit.
