The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has selected a company to perform its portion of the dredging work at Saxon Harbor.
Roen Salvage Company was awarded the $993,000 dredging contract to remove approximately 18,000 cubic yards of material from the marina’s main channel and do some repairs to the harbor’s levees, according to Lynn Rose, a spokesperson with the Army Corps in Detroit.
The dredging is necessary to remove the sediment and debris that was left in the marina after the flooding during the July 11, 2016, storm that destroyed the harbor.
The company — located in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. — was chosen on Sept. 19 from a list of pre-approved companies, Rose said.
In conjunction with the Army Corps’ effort, Iron County will be dredging out the rest of the harbor other than the main channel the Army Corps is responsible for.
The county is expected to seek bids for its dredging work in January.
The work will likely begin in spring, and Rose said the Army Corps expects to complete its dredging by August 2018.
The dredged material is expected to be taken to the county’s pit on Freeburg Pit in the town of Saxon.
