Update: Pipe leak shifts beach work away from south end

Posted on June 18, 2019

A leak in a submerged pipe carrying sand to the beach from offshore has halted construction work south of the Outer Banks Fishing Pier.

Contractor Great Lakes has moved the dredge Ellis Island, which was working in that area, north to pump sand onto the beach along with the Liberty Island near Milepost 12.5.

“Unfortunately, repairing a submerged pipe requires a few days and calm seas, so the beach nourishment contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, has instead decided to put the Ellis Island to work in the north end of town before she departs the area on June 16 for another project,” a town statement said.

“The closed area of beach near Mile Post 19 will be re-opened as equipment is removed. Although two dredges will be working in tandem in the north end of town, there will still only be one closed construction area.”

Crews near Mile Post 12.5 will move south of the landing point located near the Curlew public beach access. As work is finished in that area, the Liberty Island will make its way south to other offshore landing points.

Work should he completed in late August or early September depending on weather and equipment conditions.
