U.S. Army corps of engineers to study dredging of St. Joseph, Holland Harbors

Each year, the St. Joseph Harbor entrance is dredged to make sure large freighters and barges can get through.

There could be more dredging coming to the St. Joseph Harbor.

President Biden signed the Thomas Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024 before leaving office.

Our partners at WSJM Radio say that authorizes the US Army Corps of Engineers to improve federal regulated water infrastructure.

That includes the harbors in St. Joseph and Holland.

The Army Corps will study if those harbors need to be more thoroughly dredged.

That would mean it wouldn’t have to be dredged as often.

Crews began a dredging project at the North Manitou Island dock that will remove more than 27,00 cubic yards of sand.
