U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issues Draft Environmental Assessment for the Everglades Harbor and Channel Project

Posted on March 12, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2025) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) issues the Notice of Availability (NOA) of the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Proposed Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Everglades Harbor and Channel Project, Collier County, Florida.

The purpose of this project is to address ongoing shoaling of Everglades Harbor and maintain safe and efficient vessel navigation throughout the harbor. Everglades Harbor is located within Collier County on the west coast of southern Florida, about 58 miles southeast of Fort Myers and 88 miles north of Key West.

The project was initially dredged in 1960, prior to the development of NEPA. The purpose of the proposed project is to maintain safe and efficient vessel navigation throughout the harbor. Currently, the need for the project is driven by the accumulation of sediment, commonly referred to as shoaling. The shoaling has reduced water depths in the channel, hindering safe and efficient vessel navigation.

The draft EA and proposed FONSI are available for your review on the Jacksonville District, USACE Environmental Documents website at https://www.saj.usace.army.mil/About/Divisions-Offices/Planning/Environmental-Branch/Environmental-Documents/

Click the dropdown box beside Collier County and scroll to the bottom row of the table.

Jacksonville District requests questions or comments regarding the EA be submitted in writing via email to rachel.s.case@usace.army.mil or by U.S. mail to the letterhead address (attn. Environmental Branch, Coastal Section) within 30 days from the date of publication.

Questions concerning the project can be submitted to Rachel Case, by telephone at 904-232-1035 or by email at Rachel.s.case@usace.army.mil.
