Two St. Louis District lakes awarded fish habitat improvement grants

Posted on June 22, 2022

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District’s Lake Shelbyville and Mark Twain Lake were recently awarded the National Fish Habitat Partnership Bass Pro Shops U.S. Open Grant to improve fish habitats at the respective project sites. The projects funded through this opportunity are high-priority focus areas of the Reservoir Fish Habitat Partnership.

The grants received in the St. Louis District include more than $167,000 to improve aquatic habitat within reservoirs at Mark Twain Lake and Lake Shelbyville.”

At Mark Twain Lake, the grant will help address the loss of structural habitat, create appealing shoreline access, and encourage increased recreational angling opportunities at the Lake.

This grant will help Lake Shelbyville to continue to provide long-lasting fish habitat. Several types of fish structures will be used to create high quality habitat that will in turn support an increase in diversity of fish and wildlife and quality of experiences for visitors, anglers, and hunters. The funds will also be used to increase access to the lake.

“This is amazing news for these two lakes,” said Col. Kevin Golinghorst, St. Louis District commander. “Our team, working with our dedicated partners, came up with these proposals that the National Fish Habitat Board saw as viable and meaningful habitat improvement projects that will benefit the environment and anglers alike.”

The St. Louis District has stewardship of more than 490,000 acres of land and water in Missouri and Illinois, providing recreation, flood risk management, water supply, and hydropower to the region.
