Public Works Director Juan Florensa said state regulators have had their turtle fears abated after causing delay to the pending and intensive beach renourishment project.
Last week, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and state agencies were worried that the town’s plan to dredge both the passes on both the south and north ends of Longboat Key and distribute the sand along highly eroded beaches required more turtle relocation effort than could be accommodated.
This week, Florensa said with a successful meeting and efforts between Mote Marine and the state agencies, the town convinced the regulatory agencies that Mote has the manpower to deal with any turtle nest relocations.
