Tunisia’s “Nourishment” Project to Save Disappearing Beaches | Firstpost Africa
The North African country of Tunisia has launched a “beach nourishment” operation to protect its most popular beaches. Bulldozers are busy spreading at least 750 truckloads of sand on a beach in the resort town of Hammamet as part of this project. The beach has lost 20 metres of land over the last two years to rising sea levels and coastal erosion. Local residents say the government’s initiative is temporary and it will not be able to protect the beach permanently. Tunisia’s 80 percent of the economy relies on its 1,200 kilometres of coastline. However, the effects of climate change are threatening the livelihoods of people. Watch this video to know more.
