The dregs along an estimated 22 miles of river bottom will be sampled as part of study leading to development of a fleeting area for the Tulsa Port of Catoosa.
A section of Bird Creek going west from the port and the Verdigris River heading north will be sampled for about 9 and 12 miles plus about a mile nearly straight south from the port’s main wharf to U.S. 412, said Joe Duin, project manager for Kleinfelder Inc., which will conduct that portion of the study.
BKL Inc., consulting engineers for the port, was awarded a $158,003 contract by the City of Tulsa-Rogers County Port Authority at its October meeting to conduct the BargeFleeting Area Sedimentation Study.
A million cubic yards for the fleeting area will be removed from the Verdigris River oxbow. Port manager Brad Banks said the study will determine what effect the construction would have on both location and and rate of sedimentation in the area.
The study will also include water samples, a hydrographic survey taken about every 2,300 feet along the route and modeling to determine if more frequent dredging may be required.
