The budget proposal from the administration of President Donald J. Trump includes $131 million allocated for the Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
An announcement by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District reports that the $131 million is part of a total of $4.785 billion in discretionary funding proposed in the budget for Army Corps civil works projects throughout the world.
The Army Corps indicated the funding is expected to be used to “help improve the reliability of the region’s inland waterways navigation system, enhance the environment, and reduce the risk of flooding in the Upper Ohio River Valley.”
According to the announcement, Trump’s budget for fiscal year 2019 includes $35.1 for operation and maintenance of 16 reservoirs in the Pittsburgh area as well as $70.3 million in operations and maintenance for continued navigation on the city’s three main rivers, the Ohio, Monongahela and Allegheny.
Other money is expected to be dedicated to other projects by the Pittsburgh District of the Army Corps beyond the five-county metro region. The territory of the Pittsburgh District of the Army Corps extends into West Virginia, eastern Ohio, western Maryland and southwestern New York.
