Trump administration proposes opening 1 billion offshore acres to drilling

Posted on November 24, 2025

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The Trump administration proposed a plan Thursday to open more than 1 billion acres of ocean near the U.S. for oil and gas drilling, including areas of the Gulf off the Louisiana coast near Port Fourchon.

The five-year plan, which would run from 2026 to 2031, gives oil companies several opportunities to lease parts of the Gulf for drilling.

Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association President Tommy Faucheaux supports the proposal.

“The more energy that you can produce for yourself means that you’re less reliant on oil and gas from other parts of the world,” Faucheaux said.

The proposal is called the 11th National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program.
