The Puducherry port, operational after a gap of 12 years, conducted the trial of loading and unloading operations on Saturday evening.
The Puducherry port became defunct after slush accumulated in the estuary and after a MoU with Madras port Trust for loading and unloading of cargoes, dredging operations were conducted.
A barge with 21 containers passed through the estuary and reached the port successfully.The containers would be unloaded tonight and the barge will leave for Karaikal port on Sunday from where cargo will be loaded and returned to Chennai.
Puducherry Lt.Governor Kiran Bedi, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, Minister for port Kandasamy and legislators among others participated in the function.
Later, Ms Bedi told mediapersons that the port should be ensured that slush will not accumulate in the estuary again hindering the movement of the barge.
A huge amount of money was spent for dredging works, she added.The port will generate employment opportunity and revenue to the government, Ms Bedi said adding that the connection roads would be laid without hindering the road traffic here.
She said Puducherry is in need for more funds and the suggestions of the cabinet would be conveyed to the Prime Minister visiting Puducherry on Sunday.
