Treasure Lake dredging project in full swing

The Treasure Lake dredging project is fully underway. Work continued near New Providence Beach this week

DuBOIS — Snow and freezing temperatures have not slowed progress of the Treasure Lake dredging project.

Started in September by drawing down the lake’s water level by 10 feet, workers are currently conducting heavy machinery near New Providence Beach, with an estimated 80,000 yards of sediment to be removed.

The $3.1 million project is necessary because of sediment buildup from decades of stormwater runoff affecting property owner access to docks, according to Treasure Lake officials. Once complete, almost all docks will be restored to a depth of roughly 5 feet or more. The project is being paid for with Treasure Lake reserved funds and is expected to be completed by April of this year.

“We already have some of the best fisheries in the northeastern United States, but water recreation activities in Treasure Lake are integral to our community,” Treasure Lake Property Owners Association General Manager Ed Clark previously explained. “Without viable lakes, we lose our identity. Dredging ensures that we preserve that foundation.”

Dredging of Treasure Lake was last done in 1995.

Depending on precipitation, experts estimate it will take Treasure Lake six to nine months to refill once dredging is complete.

For safety reasons, all recreational activities are prohibited during the project and several months after until the lake refills.

Drone and time-lapse videos will be available throughout the project.

Treasure Lake is a semi-private residential community with almost 2,300 homes located in Sandy Township.
