  • Recognition: The U.S. Snagboat Montgomery was listed as a National Historic Landmark.

  • Significance: This recognition highlights the importance of dredges in historical and environmental contexts.

The U.S. Snagboat Montgomery was a steam-powered sternwheeler that removed snags, stumps, and trees that obstructed river navigation for the Army Corps of Engineer. Operating from 1926 to 1982, it serviced seven rivers in the Southeast. Built by the Charleston Dry Dock and Machine Company of Charleston, SC., it removed with its grapple an average of 150 snags a day. It measured 178 feet by 34 feet. In June 1989, it was listed as a National Historic Landmark. In 1984, the Army Corps of Engineers restored the ship. Visitors can tour it at the Tom Bevill Visitor Center in Pickensville, Alabama.
