Thinadhoo Industrial Zone reclamation hits 40 percent

Posted on January 7, 2026

MTCC, the contractor for the project, has said that 40 percent of the dredging work for the second phase of the land reclamation and shore protection of GDh. Thinadhoo Industrial Zone has now been completed.

The project involves reclaiming three hectares of land at the island’s industrial zone, laying 32,647 cubic meters of sand revetment, and constructing revetments across 254 meters. The project further includes building an 89 meter pre-cast RC retaining wall, installing lights at the harbour and canal, and constructing a timber jetty measuring 3 meters wide and 47 meters long.

In addition to this, land will be reclaimed over a 2 hectare picnic island area, with 474 meters of revetment to be constructed, and installation of groynes in a 50 meter area.

GDh. Thinadhoo has a population of over 10,000. The island’s industrial zone is even at present used for wide economic purposes, and MTCC said that the expansion would facilitate further economic activity such as bringing in new factories.

The project was handed over to MTCC in June, 2023 for MVR 53.41 million, and was scheduled to be completed within 300 days.
