When ex-Cyclone Alfred slammed into Queensland’s shoreline, it was the Gold Coast that bore the brunt.
Crashing waves carved out a 50km cliff in the sand, and now with the Easter holidays fast approaching, the clock is ticking to restore the glitter strip to its former glory.
The local council is eagerly awaiting the arrival of a 75m Danish dredger, which will suck up the sand from beneath the surf and shoot it back across the beach.
Until then, truckload after truckload from the council’s sand stockpile is being tipped out to rebuild the shoreline.
It’ll cost around $10 million, but the council believe that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the $7.5 billion pumped into the glitter strip by tourists each year.
