The dredging program at The Entrance is well underway and nearing completion.
So far, an estimated 24,000m3 of sand has been removed from a projected 30,000m3. This includes re-establishment of a pilot channel similar to previous years which Council can excavate in accordance with The Entrance Management Procedure during a flood.
Sand nourishment has taken place along the track from Karagi carpark, and on the western side of the spit that has been narrowed by erosion. These areas have been targeted to allow access by heavy machinery in a flooding event while also supporting the Little Tern habitat area used during breeding season.
Additional sand has been placed on the ocean side from the beach access to the carpark south along the sand spit, as well as north of Karagi Reserve on the ocean beach to better mitigate coastal erosion impacts.
The program also requires sand extracted from the channel to remain in the same system or sediment compartment (generally bound by Hargraves Street in the north). Using sand for nourishment in locations outside of the sediment compartment increases risks of coastal erosion.
Work is expected to continue until the beginning of May, and the Karagi Reserve carpark will be closed until then. Picnic Point boat ramp will remain open during this time.
For your safety, please stay clear even when dredge is not in operation and remain behind the barriers.
