Como parte del Comité Científico del Diálogo, estamos colaborando en la organización de esta importante reunión en febrero próximo en Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Una sesión especial sobre el tema en el ámbito del Caribe formará parte del evento.

The Cartagena dialogue on Cruise, Ports and Cities 2020 is an international Conference, organized by the Universidad de los Andes, in collaboration with the University of the Aegean, Greece, and University of Genoa, Italy, to be held in Cartagena, Colombia, from 19th to 21st February 2020, under the theme “Preparing Ports, Cities and Destinations for the next day of cruising: An International academic-industry dialogue on how best to accommodate the seemingly unstoppable growth of cruise activities ”. This international conference for cruise ports, stakeholders and decision-makers, and international scholars to discuss and interchange ideas on how best ports, cities, and destinations can prepare themselves in order to meet the challenges, achieve a sustainable accommodation and deliver a tourist experience in light of the consistently growing interest of cruise lines and citizens to cruise around the globe. The event will also engage major cruise ports in the region, and associations representing ports and other stakeholders, in order to enhance the substance of discussions and develop concrete proposals for achieving the most desirable economic, environmental, and social sustainability of cruise activities development. The program is expected to include both academic and industry sessions.
El diálogo de Cartagena sobre Cruceros, Puertos y Ciudades 2020 es una Conferencia internacional, organizada por la Universidad de los Andes, en colaboración con la Universidad del Egeo, Grecia, y la Universidad de Génova, Italia, que se celebrará en Cartagena, Colombia, del 19 al 21 de febrero de 2020, bajo el lema “Preparando Puertos, Ciudades y Destinos para el próximo día de crucero”: Un diálogo internacional entre el mundo académico y la industria sobre la mejor manera de dar cabida al crecimiento aparentemente imparable de las actividades de los cruceros”. Esta conferencia internacional para los puertos de cruceros, las partes interesadas y los responsables de la toma de decisiones, y los académicos internacionales, busca discutir e intercambiar ideas sobre cómo los mejores puertos, ciudades y destinos pueden prepararse para hacer frente a los desafíos, lograr un alojamiento sostenible y ofrecer una experiencia turística a la luz del creciente interés en las líneas de cruceros y de los ciudadanos por los cruceros de todo el mundo. El evento también contará con la participación de los principales puertos de cruceros de la región, así como con asociaciones que representan a los puertos y otras partes interesadas, con el fin de mejorar el contenido de los debates y así elaborar propuestas concretas para lograr la sostenibilidad económica, ambiental y social más deseable del desarrollo de las actividades de cruceros. Se espera que el programa incluya sesiones tanto académicas como industriales.

Why this Conference?
An uninterrupted growth of cruise activities has been recorded for every single year, for more than three decades, and is in the course of continuation. This phenomenon has been supported by an unstoppable globalisation trend of both the supply (offer of cruises) and the demand (internationalisation of passenger source markets) sides of cruising, with the Caribbean and North America continuing to stand as the major cruise region of all.
Regional variants continue to exist, and the fundamentals of growth differ around the globe. These trends are revealed when comparing the details of the trends in the traditional American market, with the maturing European market(s), or the booming Asian one. Intra-regional dynamics go hand-in-hand with substantial intra-regional shifts of cruise activities.
While both the growing numbers of more than three decades and the detailed fundamentals of this growth would suggest that the globalisation is ‘unstoppable’, the effects of this trend have in recent times started to be questionable. Societal pressures have emerged in several locations that have experienced major cruise growth within a short period of time. In certain destinations, local communities have started questioning the unqualified growth of cruising, which had for long been taken as an a priori beneficial development. In a number of already developed cruise destinations, especially those which are also popular with other forms of tourism, the increase of cruise activity is not any more the main goal: emphasis has shifted towards the potential negative effects that existing and potential future growth of cruising might result in. Environmental impacts and other potential externalities pose pressures on destinations, thus affect social perceptions on cruise and concerns as regards further growth. Realising, increasing, and respecting the carrying capacity of ports and destinations and addressing the emerging social and environmental questions of today are the conditions of cruise growth continuation.
This acknowledgment fuels present and future business strategies as well as research streams: the ability of all stakeholders and the scholarly community to address the environmental and social questions of today is increasingly seen as the condition for securing the sustainable development of the globalised cruise industry.
The adjustment of cruise ports and cities to serve these trends, as well as the desires of port-cities and linked tourist destinations to enjoy the benefits produced, is important. As is the preparation of ports as well as of cities and destinations to accommodate cruise activities while securing the economic, environmental, social, and cultural sustainability of their growth. Once defined, specific business cruise strategies might work in support of making this growth sustainable. The event will benefit by the intellectual debate that has been developed in the 2010s within the global Port Performance Research Network (PPRN), as well as by the professional experience of several members of the scientific committee, either via related scientific and contract research or related professional experience and institutional positions.
Se ha registrado durante cada año, durante más de tres décadas un crecimiento ininterrumpido de las actividades de cruceros, y está en curso de continuación. Este fenómeno se ha visto favorecido por una fuerte tendencia a la globalización tanto de la oferta (oferta de cruceros) como de la demanda (internacionalización de los mercados de origen de los pasajeros) de los cruceros, manteniendo al Caribe y a América del Norte cómo las principales regiones de cruceros.
Las variantes regionales siguen existiendo, y los fundamentos de crecimiento difieren en todo el mundo. Estas tendencias se revelan cuando se comparan los detalles de las tendencias en el mercado tradicional americano, con los mercados europeos en proceso de maduración, o con el mercado asiático en auge. Las dinámicas intrarregionales van de la mano con los cambios sustanciales en las actividades de los cruceros a nivel intrarregional.
Aunque tanto el número creciente de más de tres décadas como los fundamentos detallados de este crecimiento sugerirían que la globalización es “imparable”, los efectos de esta tendencia se han empezado a cuestionar en los últimos tiempos. Las presiones sociales han surgido en diferentes lugares que han experimentado un crecimiento importante de los cruceros en un corto período de tiempo. En ciertos destinos, las comunidades locales han empezado a cuestionar el crecimiento indiscriminado de los cruceros, que durante mucho tiempo se ha considerado un desarrollo beneficioso a priori. En una serie de destinos de cruceros ya desarrollados, especialmente aquellos que también son populares por otras formas de turismo, el incremento en la actividad de los cruceros ya no es más el objetivo principal: el énfasis se ha desplazado hacia los efectos negativos potenciales que podría implicar el crecimiento actual y futuro de los cruceros. Los impactos ambientales u otras posibles externalidades ejercen presión sobre los destinos, ya que afectan la percepción social de los cruceros y genera preocupación frente al hecho de un mayor crecimiento. La realización, el aumento y el respeto de la capacidad de carga de los puertos y destinos y el tratamiento de las nuevas cuestiones sociales y medioambientales de hoy en día son las condiciones para la continuación del crecimiento de los cruceros.
Este reconocimiento impulsa las estrategias empresariales presentes y futuras, así como los flujos de investigación: la habilidad de todas las partes interesadas y de la comunidad académica para abordar los cuestionamientos medioambientales y sociales actuales, se considera cada vez más como la condición para asegurar el desarrollo sostenible de la industria globalizada de los cruceros.
Es importante la adecuación de los puertos y ciudades de los cruceros a estas tendencias, así como los deseos de las ciudades portuarias y de los destinos turísticos vinculados a disfrutar de los beneficios producidos. También se debe considerar la preparación de los puertos, así como de las ciudades y los destinos para acomodar las actividades de los cruceros, mientras se asegura al mismo tiempo la sostenibilidad económica, ambiental, social y cultural de su crecimiento. Una vez definidas, las estrategias específicas de negocios de los cruceros podrían servir de apoyo para que se dé un crecimiento sostenible.
El evento se beneficiará del debate intelectual que se llevó a cabo en la década de 2010 en el marco de la Red de Investigación sobre el Desempeño Portuario (PPRN), así como de la experiencia profesional de varios miembros del comité científico, ya sea a través de la investigación científica y contractual relacionada o de la experiencia profesional y los puestos institucionales relacionados.
The industry-academia dialogue
The intention is to engage in the event the major cruise ports in the region, as well as associations representing ports and other stakeholders, decision makers in order to discuss the key themes, the prospects and their role towards sustainable cruise, interact with scholars, and if possible develop concrete proposal (i.e. in the format of ‘Cartagena declaration’?) for achieving the most desirable economic, environmental, and social sustainability of cruise activities growth.
The second part of CCPC 2020 aims to stimulate intellectual discussion between scholars studying aspects related to ports policy, allowing interactions between theory and practice.
A special session about the cruising in the Caribbean will be part of the Dialogue
La intención es que en el evento se involucren los principales puertos de cruceros de la región, así como las asociaciones que representan a los puertos y otras partes interesadas, además de los responsables de la toma de decisiones, con el fin de discutir los temas centrales, las perspectivas y su rol hacia la sostenibilidad de cruceros, interactuar con los académicos y, si es posible, desarrollar propuestas concretas (por ejemplo, en el formato de “Declaración de Cartagena”?) para lograr la sostenibilidad económica, ambiental y social más deseable a partir del crecimiento de las actividades de los cruceros.
La segunda parte de CCPC 2020 pretende estimular la discusión intelectual entre los académicos que estudian sobre aspectos relacionados con políticas portuarias, permitiendo así interacciones entre la teoría y la práctica.

Contributions on research key topics of the cruise shipping and port industry related to the “local“ Caribbean context are welcome.
Special Sessions Proposals for the organisation of special sessions are also welcomed.

Schedule for submitting contributions
Publications Papers submitted for the full review track of the Conference are eligible, if accepted, for publication in the conference associated journals and special issues. Please note that each journal has different requirements for publication, so in some cases further edits or a new (double-blind) review process will have to be completed before publication.
