The Member of Parliament for Talensi constituency is distributing GHC60,000 worth of improved seeds to dry season farmers and working with major mining companies to expand water access for agriculture, according to the constituency’s communication officer.
Michael Nangena, the National Democratic Congress communication officer for Talensi, speaking to Asaase News, said the MP, Daniel Dung Mahama has purchased improved onion and pepper seeds that will be delivered to farmers engaged in dry season cultivation.
The initiative includes plans to construct roads to support agricultural activities in the area.
In addition to the seed distribution, the MP has secured commitments from two large mining companies operating in the constituency to dredge small irrigation dams during the dry season when rainfall subsides. The dredging aims to increase water availability for farmers, Nangena said in a recent interview.
“When the rains have subsided, they also moved to most of these small irrigation dams we have there to dredge them so that water can be made more available for people to engage in dry season farming,” Nangena said.
The MP and District Chief Executive are also pushing for a formal corporate social responsibility agreement with the mining firms. Nangena said such an agreement would ensure the companies provide tangible benefits to communities affected by mining operations.
The mining companies were given three weeks to review proposals, with a deadline approaching soon, according to Nangena.
Beyond the dry season farming initiative, the MP has provided fertilizer support to main season farmers and secured over 1,000 health insurance packages for constituents. More than 250 students are expected to benefit from various assistance programs.
Nangena said the MP has also facilitated employment opportunities, bringing appointment letters for at least 10 youth during recent constituency visits, with additional board appointments arranged privately for other residents.
“By and large, he’s doing well,” Nangena said, noting the MP’s frequent presence in the constituency despite being a first-term legislator.
