SURF CITY, N.C. – Surf City has been in the middle of a dredging project in Banks Channel since January to increase the width and depth of the channel.

“It’s a continuation of a dredging project that Topsail Beach had started a couple of years ago,” said town manager Kyle Breuer.
It’s the Surf City’s Banks Channel Shallow Draft Navigation Project.
“Unfortunately, we do understand it’s an inconvenience but it is a necessity for the town,” said Breuer.
Crews are dredging material from the full length of Banks Channel and moving 800,000 cubic yards of sand to the Surf City coastline.
“Additional sand on the beach will provide additional protections. It’ll increase our recreational beach area,” said Breuer.
The project though is supposed completed by now.
“They had some delays getting equipment and material down here and then we had a string of pretty tough weather,” said Breuer.
He says extending the deadline did bring some concerns with spring break this week and warmer weather approaching.
“Especially on a warm weekend like we’re expecting,” said Breuer.
However, Breuer says it’s work that needs to be done and he’s hoping people can be patient just a little longer.
“If you just hang with us for a little bit more than a week, we’ll be out of here and everyone can enjoy Surf City,” he said.
The project is now expected to be completed by April 12. Full demobilization of the project is expected to be finished by the end of April.
