SUISUN CITY — After more than a year of delays, the much-needed dredging of Suisun City’s harbor and the Whispering Bay channel will start Aug. 1, according to the city’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Marina.
Work is still going on to prepare Pierce Island to take all of the dredging spoils and to put up fencing to ensure the island’s preparations do not harm any endangered Salt Marsh Harvest Field mice.
The dredging equipment will start mobilizing July 28. The dredging should be completed by the end of September.
Boaters using the harbor are being cautioned that there will be some limited access to some areas at different times depending on where the dredgers are doing their work.
Boaters and residents are urged to check the city’s website at www.suisun.com for the latest information.
The Suisun City Council approved a $2.18 million contract with the Dutra Group in late November. This didn’t count $1.68 million the city was already spending to prepare Pierce Island.
It has been 10 years since the harbor was last dredged and the city wanted to get the work done in 2017. However, the sole bid received was higher than what was budgeted.
A suggestion Tuesday night to also dredge the north turning basin was turned down after the City Council was told that it would cost about $300,000, potentially overfill Pierce Island and would not be allowed by the state.
The council is concerned that this might be the last time that the city can use Pierce Island as a dumping ground for dredge spoils and would face an increased cost next time when they would also have to find another place to put the spoils.
