The Suisun City Council on Tuesday awarded The Dutra Group a contract to dredge the Suisun City Marina and Whispering Bay – after a year’s delay.
City Council members gave their unanimous approval to the $2.18-million contract that could see dredging start as early as July 2019 if the dredgers don’t have to deal with any protected animal species such as the Clapper Rail.
If the protected birds are detected, the dredging work would not start until August.
The dredging is the second half of the overall project. The city is already paying about $1.68 million for the first part of the project, which is rehabilitating Pierce Island to allow it to take the spoils from the dredging.
Mayor-elect Lori Wilson praised staff for getting the work done under budget, about $82,500 less that the $4.45 million which Suisun City put aside for the project.
It has been 10 years since the marina was dredged and the city had hoped to get the work done last year, but the sole bid the city received was higher than how much was budgeted.
City Councilwoman Jane Day looked ahead to the next dredging and asked what Suisun City would do if Pierce Island is no longer available.
