Stone Harbor Waterway Dredging Nears Completion

Posted on February 27, 2018

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun a project to dredge the Intracoastal Waterways in the Stone Harbor-Middle Township area. The project will be completed by the first week in March.

The dredge Fullerton will clear waterways between markers 419 and 421, with the resulting sand placed in thin layers on the Ring Island nesting bird habitat. The Wetlands Institute will monitor site conditions and habitat usage.

This use of dredge material for marsh restoration and the creation of wildlife habitat is a relatively new attempt to use such material for environmental benefit as sea level rise presents potential dangers to the sustainability of the increasingly important wetlands.
