The federal government funds the lion’s share of the beach replenishment program that keeps sand on county beaches, protecting property, and promoting tourism. So, when the feds want to study the movement of sand along the entire shoreline on Seven Mile Island, no one objects. Timing is another matter entirely.
Stone Harbor Council discussed a letter informing the borough of the study at its May 15 meeting. The methodology that will govern the study requires measurement of water depth, via a boat moving out from and back into shore, from dry beach to 45 feet. The problem is that the feds want to conduct their study in August at the peak of the summer tourist season. Borough officials are working to have the study moved to a date after Labor Day.
