An underwater survey of the Grand River bed between Grand Rapids and the Bass River Recreation Area is expected to begin soon after state officials chose to forge ahead with a project that failed to excite Ottawa County leaders.
In November, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) approved spending $100,000 of general fund money to map the river bottom as a first step toward dredging the 22.5-mile stretch of the Lower Grand River.
“Every day, people come up and tell me that’s a good idea,” said Dan Hibma, a West Michigan developer spearheading the dredging push.
