State hosts public session for beach replenishment project

Dune breach north of the Indian River Inlet sends over wash onto Route 1 (Delaware Department of Transportation)

Posted on September 25, 2024

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is holding a public information session Tuesday evening, September 24, 2024, about an upcoming beach dredging and dune replenishment project on the north side of the Indian River Inlet.

The dune that runs alongside Route 1 has been breached twice this year, most recently on August 18th as Hurricane Ernesto churned hundreds of miles off shore.

The work includes the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT)  installing ‘sheetpile’ – sheets of steel set in place vertically into the ground to create a wall to protect the road bed.

DNREC will perform emergency sand replenishment ahead of the winter storm season, while working with the Army Corps of Engineers on longer term solutions.

The information session is being held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Bethany Beach Town Hall.
