The state Department of Environmental Protection is expected to issue a permit today that is necessary for the shipping channel in the St. Johns River to be deepened.
It moves the long-awaited project one step closer to fruition — but it also sets the stage for the St. Johns Riverkeeper to formally challenge the work.
The permit is a joint coastal permit and authorization to use sovereign submerged lands, essentially authorizing dredging on state land.
The DEP permit had been delayed since about November, but is expected to be granted sometime today. The Riverkeeper is already planning on challenging it, a legal step they have 14 days to take.
