Start basin-based management of joint rivers: IFC to govt

Posted on June 27, 2019

International Farakka Committee-New York has urged the government to build a basin-based management system of the joint rivers flowing from the neighbouring country.

‘It’s essential to build up this basin-based system to attain sustainable development goals,’ IFC-New York secretary general Syed Tipu Sultan said at a luncheon meeting with journalists at the National Press Club on Tuesday.

He also urged prime minister Sheikh Hasina to take initiative to ensure such river management.

He appreciated the prime minister’s thoughts to preserve water in the rivers through deep dredging that would help promote agriculture and fisheries. ‘But it’s more essential to ensure sustainable management by protecting the environment of Bangladesh,’ he said.

The IFC welcomed the prime minister’s plans for preserving water during the monsoon. ‘But the prime minister has to take regional and international initiative to keep the rivers alive for the sake of livelihood of the people,’ said Tipu Sultan.

IFC Bangladesh senior vice-chairman and eminent water expert SI Khan and IFC coordinator senior journalist Mostafa Kamal Majumder were also present at the meeting.
