Instead, the city’s plan have shifted to something simpler, though the wastewater treatment plant may need bigger solutions in generations to come because of sea level rise, City Manager John Regan said.

The city hired Flood Risk America to provide waterproof barriers that will protect electrical components that keep the plant running and will protect other parts of the plant.

“(It) gives us protection against storm surge, hurricane surge, that does flood the property and can damage electrical equipment,” Regan said.

On Wednesday, officials with the firm Flood Risk America completed some of the final work to get the plant storm-ready.

The crews have prepped doors, electrical panels and other equipment so that flood barriers can be easily installed by city workers in advance of a storm. The equipment provides a water-tight seal, said Stephen Gill, partner and CEO of the company.

Gill worked alongside employees at the entrance to administrative offices at the plant on Wednesday.

The company’s flood panels are “made from a marine-grade material that was used in the haul of an icebreaker and marine vessels,” according to a company brochure. The “fabric is ballistic, military-grade, and withstands up to 170 MPH winds or a category 5 hurricane.”
