Sohar starts dredging for Marsa LNG project

Dredging work is now underway as part of the Marsa LNG project

Posted on March 5, 2025

Oman’s Sohar Port and Freezone has started dredging operations for the Marsa LNG project, which will establish the Middle East’s first LNG bunkering hub. Led by Boskalis’ trailing suction hopper dredgers Coastway and Willem van Oranje, the project will remove approximately 4 million m3 of material to create a dedicated approach channel and berth pocket for the LNG plant.

Dredging operations are expected to be completed by September 2025 and are a key part of Sohar’s plans to become a regional leader in LNG bunkering. Located within the port, Marsa LNG will produce one million metric tons of LNG annually, powered by a 300 MW solar plant to ensure operations are driven by renewable energy. Once operational, Marsa LNG will offer new maritime energy solutions in the Middle East, providing a cleaner fuel alternative for shipping.
